If Suffolk is forced to go unitary on the basis of the Boundary Committee’s two available options, then it should be a single unitary not two. A single unitary authority would be more financially efficient and better placed to provide integrated planning and improved services. The big draw back to either solution is the undetermined powers and undemocratic appointment of the “Community Boards” that the Boundary Committee are proposing should replace the District and Town Councils. Whichever solution is adopted, Suffolk Together will fight for a strong Parish representation on the Community Boards. This could be brought about by small “clusters” of Parishes appointing their representatives for the community boards and these parish representatives would have voting powers which the unelected appointees on the community boards would not.
